STYLE ICON OF THE MONTH:January:Taylor Momsen

Having recently posted about Taylor Momsen rocking grunge style on the streets of New York inspired me to put together a grunge inspired look for those of us on a budget. Personally, I’ve always loved grunge style and am really excited that it’s coming back in to fashion. I am from the Northwest after all. Getting a basic and simple grunge look like Taylor Momsen wore is a lot easier than you might expect.

For this outfit, I picked the Chelsie Frayed Straight Jean in black from Forever 21 and the Cuffed Sleeve V-Neck Top in white from Forever 21 as the basic pieces. Even with basic outfits, you still need to have a statement piece or two thrown in. For Taylor, it was definitely her leather jacket. The Silence & Noise Motorcycle Jacket in Black from Urban Outfitters is quite similar to hers. Or, to get even more wallet friendly, try the Julie Belted Zip Up Jacket in black from Forever 21. While you can’t really see her shoes in the picture, I thought that a great pair of slouchy boots worn over the skinny jeans would look great. I loved the Brianda Slouched Boots in black from Forever 21 with this look.


For make up, it’s all about black eye liner that looks like it was applied the day before and slept in. Keep it messy and smuged! My favorite way to get smokey liner like Taylor Momsen’s is to apply a line of regular black liner near my lash line, try L’Oreal HIP Eye Liner Pencil in Black, and then use smudge some black shadow, like L’Oreal HIP Metallic Shadow Duo in Platinum, along the line. You could use the white part of the shadow on the inner corners of your eyes and along your brown bone to brighten the look. Finish with several coats of volumizing mascara, such as L’Oreal HIP Volumizing Mascara High Drama in Ultimate Black. Personally, I thought that this look could look great with red lips as well as nude lips. Try wearing L’Oreal HIP Shine Struck Liquid Lipcolor in Turbulent to add a touch of drama. While matte black polish is going to be big this spring, any shade of blade will do. Try NYX Nails Nail Polish in Black if you’re on a budget.
