Wingin'It

The black winged eyeliner/cat eye trend presents makeup junkies everywhere with a catch-22. It’s a sexy, deceptively simple and utterly desirable look, yet it’s difficult to achieve because of the wet, creamy and liquid products and steady hand required to effectively pull it off. You don’t simply line and go, although it looks like that’s all you have to do!

To help you navigate those murky (!) liquid liner waters, I present Beauty News NYC’s guide to wingin’ it
The makeup artists we chatted with suggested several different (and sometime contradictory) methods and modes, but that’s what makes it artistry! The look can be created with a myriad of products, from felt tip pens to inky pots of gels and creams! NYC based artist Julie Tomlinson (http://www.julietomlinson.com) said, “Shadows tend to get messy and will not give you the same result” so stick with a wet-to-dry product.
About this trend, which is so hot it could melt butter, N.Y.C. New York Color makeup artist Mathew Nigara enthused, “The liquid liner trend, in my opinion, has really been around for almost five years. It’s a trend that hasn’t, and isn’t, going anywhere. This is because cat eyes/liquid liners are a classic makeup look but have the ability to create a punky edge and simply a depth to an eye without the use of shadows. So whether the trend is a bold lip, intense eye or pronounced cheek, liner is a product that can link them all, yet at the same time give a woman the benefit of a more defined eye and the look of more lush lashes.”

Before you even select a product, you must decide exactly what shape you prefer. Most of us don’t want to end up going as dramatic as, say, vocalist/hot mess Amy Winehouse, but Los Angeles and Miami-based celebrity makeup artist Jen Farhood (http://www.jenfarhood.com) said, “Start with a thin line on the inner corner of your eye and make it slightly thicker as you draw the line to the outer corner. Make sure you end the line where your eye ends.” However, if you want a more dramatic cat eye look, Farhood said, “angle the line on the outer corner up and extend it slightly.” New Jersey-based artist Rikki Zazula mentioned this as well, calling it the “flick,” or the extension! She said, “It’s important to extend the liquid line slightly past the actual end of your eye in a swept upward fashion. This little flick at the end is what truly expands the shape. No need to go all ‘Halloween’ and create a sideways triangle like cat woman or a thick line to your temple like Cleopatra. The sexiest thing about liquid liner is its subtlety.”
POSTURE:
You need to assume a specific body posture when applying liquid liner and doing a winged look, since it’s such a tricky process! Nigara told us, “The best way to apply liquid eyeliner is to actually look at yourself in the 3/4 profile, not straight on. I always begin with the line in the center of the eye and work my way out. I break up the eyeliner into three sections: the center, the outer wing and the inside. Begin in the center and stop at the outer edge of the eye socket, being sure to create the desired width of the line from this point. This is where the shape of the line is formed. Then starting again with the brush, turn your face into profile and lengthen the line, being sure to extend it out straight and not at an upward angle. This will ensure that there is an angular wing shape and not the dreaded duck tail wing which never is pretty. At the same angle in the mirror, using just the side of the brush, connect the middle portion to the inner , painting the last stroke of the three piece line, gradually getting thinner and disappearing toward the tear duct. By doing the line in three sections. it ensures a more precise and controlled application.”
Farhood suggested looking in the mirror and tilting your chin up, with your eyes looking down and to use your pinky finger to steady your hand on your cheek.

TOOLS:

Zazula expressed the cruciality of cleaning your brush! “Just because it lives inside the product doesn’t mean you should ignore it! Especially if your liner contains mica; your brush will gather build up and get a bit crusty. This will impede on achieving the perfect fluid line. Take the time to really cleanse the wand,” Zazula stressed. Tomlinson concurred, “Start with a good brush! This is crucial. A brush with a very fine tip is what you want to purchase before attempting this look.” Also, keep Q-Tips handy. Q-Tips help to smooth out the lines. Try moistening the Q-Tip a bit and apply directly underneath the line. This will help to clean up any mistakes and make the line look very sharp!”

PRODUCTS:

*GELS/CREAMS/POTS: These are the easiest to use, if you go for a waterproof formula, Farhood said. It won’t smudge or fade. We suggest MAC Fluid Line in Blacktrack (which does not budge) or Rock and Republic in Smut, Estee Lauder Gel, Smashbox Crème Liner in Caviar and Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner in Caviar Ink. Use a primer to help the liner adhere and it will have the same effect as tattooing a black line across your upper lash line. Each of these liners comes in pots that resemble inkwells and is best applied with a thin brush, while there is margin for error. You can retrace lines and add to their thickness or use the Tomlinson-recommended Q-Tip to correct imperfections.
Available at Sephora or fine department stores.

*LIQUIDS: These are the trickiest of the bunch, as they require a few moments to dry, so be sure to keep your eye closed after drawing your line or it’ll migrate upwards. Tomlinson also suggested “draw your cat eye with a kohl pencil first if you are unsure of your skill set. This will be your ‘mock up liner.’ You can fine tune this line with your brush and liquid liner afterwards.” Urban Decay’s XX in Oil Slick is our recommendation, as it isn’t a basic black; there are gold flecks that soften this edgy look. The brush is comprised of loose bristles, so it takes a steady hand. It also provides the thinnest, most delicate line across your lashes.
Available at Sephora or http://www.urbandecay.com/.

PENS: Pens provide you with the ability to make a precise line and give you the most control, but they can be unforgiving if you make a mistake and smear. Stila’s Stay All Day pen is the closest to a line-and-go product. If you aren’t ready to splurge, you can try a drugstore brand, like Maybelline Line Stiletto or Physician’s Formula, and practice and play with those till you get it 100 percent right. Once you are an expert at drawing black lines at your lashline, you can upgrade to a department store brand, since this is a look that requires practice!

Available at Sephora or http://www.sephora.com.

EXPERIMENT:
If black is too harsh, Rock & Republic offers a myriad of colors, as does MAC. “I am all for the classic thin to thick perfectly placed liquid black line. However, let us not forget that there are a million other colors out there for our choosing,” Zazula said. “Light metallic tones brighten eyes when placed in the inner corner or on the bottom lash line. Plum brings out the dullest of green/hazel eyes, copper and metallic browns bring new life to bothered blues. Bright hues when used in moderation can give that extra pop needed to feel confident.”

Westwood condemns consumerism after London show

One-of-a-kind designer Vivienne Westwood Sunday night presented a gorgeous collection of autumn and winter outfits at London Fashion Week, then went backstage and told reporters she hopes people stop buying her clothes.

"Stop all this consumerism," said Westwood, the former high priestess of punk who has increasingly used her catwalk shows to spotlight her concern about climate change.
"I just tell people, stop buying clothes. Why not protect this gift of life while we have it? I don't take the attitude that destruction is inevitable. Some of us would like to stop that and help people survive," she said.
Her show capped a gala day at London Fashion Week, with shows by Matthew Williamson, Jasper Conran and other top designers.

VIVIAN WESTWOOD
Long one of Britain's most celebrated designers, Westwood said she wants to try other challenges, including a television series on art and science after she shows her Gold Label collection in Paris next month.
She was in an enviable position: Her new collection had brought the house down, supermodel Kate Moss — in a black top, tight jeans and black leather cap — was waiting to congratulate her, and the audience of adoring fans included singer Janet Jackson and model Naomi Campbell.
The eclectic Red Label collection, which Westwood called romantic, began with models wearing tee shirts designed to call attention to the crisis in Haiti, in hopes of raising money for Campbell's effort to help mothers and babies displaced by the earthquake there.
Then it moved quickly into Westwood's special realm, a mixture of odd pairings that combined some traditional elements with looks that were new and different. One outfit mixed brightly colored plaid trousers with a polka dot blouse in orange and red — somehow, it worked.
There were mustard-colored tops and tuxedo-style jackets with pink details, Alice in Wonderland hats, and one model came out wearing an apron, sharpening a knife somewhat menacingly as she walked. Some of the most effective pieces were the simpler ones, including an elegant black cocktail dress that closed the show.
"The great thing about Vivienne is that you can wear her clothes if you're 16 or 60," said Jo Wood, a supermodel in an earlier era who recently returned to the catwalk to model for Westwood. "She's fantastic."

MATTHEW WILLIAMSON
Designer Matthew Williamson showed an exuberant display of slinky evening wear in vibrant colors.
With a variety of prints, fur, slim-cut leather pants and even low-rise harem pants, Williamson wowed a star-studded audience with his Autumn/Winter 2010 collection.
"Absolutely fantastic," said '60s supermodel Twiggy, whose stellar career has been marked by longevity. "I want about ten things. I want the harem pants in every color, they were amazing, and also those evening dresses, I probably couldn't wear them, but I think we'll be seeing a lot of those on the red carpet."
Twiggy said Williamson's clothes were extremely wearable.
"I love Matthew to death, I think he's a genius," she said. "They're for all age groups. The young look great in them. I'm certainly not young, and I love wearing them."
Actress Sienna Miller was also proud to pronounce herself a "FOM" — Friend of Matthew — and praised his outfits from her front row perch. So did model Yasmin Le Bon.
"He's taken the brand to a whole new level," said Miller, who is showing her Twenty8Twelve collection, designed with her sister Savannah Miller, later Sunday night.
The collection showed Williamson's easy approach, with gray and black checked wool overcoats set off by fur sleeves or collars in the same colors. Underneath the coats, models wore sexy off-the-shoulder dresses or dresses cut extremely low in the back.

JASPER CONRAN
Candy-colored silk crepe dresses for winter? Why not, asked designer Jasper Conran.
Conran kicked off his show with ballooning capes and dresses in thick wool and flannel worn over bodysuits.
His dramatic spherical coats and bodices were inspired by British sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, while details like space-age mirrored sequins and geometric cutouts were a modern take on the playful shapes and styles of the 60s.
Dark sheer tulle dresses were adorned with PVC panels, geometric sequins and huge polished silver cuffs.
Conran's black and grays contrasted with imposing cardinal red, a bold orange and peacock blue.
Even with softer styles, the designer focused on big, voluptuous silhouettes — like a nude textured organza dress with a billowing back resembling insect wings. "Peep show" A-line shift dresses had rectangular sheer panels cut out whimsically at the waist, thigh and arch of the back.
The show closed with a splash of color and light, fluid fabrics that contrasted with the severity of the earlier pieces. Summery silk crepe dresses appeared in eye-popping fuchsia, canary yellow and tangerine, just right to lift the winter mood.

Reliable Tiffany jewelry

Ornate design and beautiful lines are its best character. You do not need to worry about the quality. Tiffany jewelry itself has no problems in quality.

Among silver jewelry, Tiffany jewelry is the hot pick of many people. Tiffany is a brand name around the world. Whether used as a gift or bought for oneself, design Tiffany jewelry will never make people embarrassed. As a big brand in the jewelry world, the quality is out of question. The after service of Tiffany silver jewelry also assures people the reliability of Tiffany.
Most people will buy Tiffany silver jewelry from jewelers. That is a good choice. Professional jewelers can offer authentic Tiffany silver jewelry and very good after sales service. Besides, people can choose their favorite Tiffany jewelry from thousands of Tiffany necklaces, Tiffany bracelets, Tiffany rings, etc.

how to make a rainbow cake!

This cake is suitable for many occasions:

A child’s birthday
Your mom’s birthday
Your friend’s jam band CD release party
. . . so I’m sure you’ll find a use for this recipe soon.

And of course, you can use any white cake recipe you’d like. This is just how I make it because I have delusions of wearing size 2 someday.

Okay, on with the ingredients.

That’s all. Notice the lack of fat in here? Mmmmmm . . . chemicals.

Pour a can of soda (12 oz) 2-12 oz cans of soda into the cake mix two boxes of cake mix. No eggs, no oil, no water, no sweat.

Now we measure it.

I’m going to round to 30 oz 60 oz because I have six colours and isn’t that just too convenient? It worked out to 3/4 c 1.5 c per colour, measurementwise. So I divvied that up and used my gel colours.

(the gel colours, while not as good as pigment dye, are much bolder than the very liquidy food colouring you probably grew up with)
The first colour you drop into the pan, use about 2/3 of the mix for that colour. Otherwise, the top (last) colour will really dominate. I used a heaping 1/4 c 1 cup of each colour.

Drop the colours, one by one, into the middle of the pan, in neat concentric-ish gobs. Remember the cake is going to be sliced in the side there, so mixing it around on top isn’t going to make your slices any more psychedelic (trust me, I did the three-dimensional thinking for you already).

When you’re three colours in, start doing the reverse with the other pan. Since I’m going in rainbow order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, I got from red to yellow in the first pan, then purple, blue, green in the second. This is so that your two pans are equal if your measurements aren’t exact (and they’re not likely to be).

Now finish up.

Follow the box’s baking instructions and do your dishes.

Such lovely dishes!
Now for the frosting: 1 box 2 boxes of fat free sugar free pudding mix, and 8 oz 16 oz (two of the 8 oz tubs pictured) of fat-free whipped topping. Or sugar-free. Or light. Or regular. They’re all pretty much the same. But that’s it.

Holy shit, the cake’s done! Toothpick clean and everything! Get that shit out of the oven!!!

The frosting will be a little tough to spread, so treat it like a buttercream (I guess, I’ve never frosted a cake with buttercream). Putting gobs all over, then smoothing in worked well for me.

And look at that thing! It’s so pretty-lookin.

Here’s what this particular cake looked like. See how it’s tiny and too rounded and it kind of isn’t all that great? That’s because I didn’t double the recipe. It’s a mistake I’ll only make once.

Sunny Day Rainbow Cake
2 boxes white cake mix
24 oz of clear diet soda (2 cans, ginger ale and sprite work well)
gel food colouring
16 oz whipped topping
2 oz instant fat-free sugar-free pudding mix (2 smallish boxes)

The Dieting

Mix the cake mix with the soda according to regular instructions on box. It will be lumpy afterward. Again, you can use any white cake recipe you want, this is just how I do it.
The Rainbowing

Measure the total volume (by my estimate, 64 oz), then divide by 6 and measure into separate bowls. There are 8 oz in a cup, so 64/6 = 10 to 11 oz, or 1 cup + 2 tbsp.
Stir colour into each bowl with its own spoon. For the first colour into the pan, measure out 2/3 to 3/4 of your mix (in this case about 1 c) as close to the middle as you can. Drop in your first three colours, then work on the other pan with the last three colours. So if you’re doing rainbow order, the first pan should have red, then orange, then yellow, and now the purple, blue and green go into the second pan. As a recap, this is so both layers are roughly the same size.

Bake the cake for however long the box tells you to bake it. Check it when the box says to, but usually it’ll need an extra 5 or 10 minutes or maybe more because of the density of the soda method. Just keep baking, checking back every 5 minutes or so until a toothpick to the center comes out clean. Let cool completely before moving to a wire rack.

The Frostinging

Meanwhile, make your frosting. Just mix the pudding mix in with the whipped topping for a few minutes. Dye if you’re into that.
Frost your fat-free cake with your fat-free whipped frosting. Eat.

Beauty Trend: Lips Autumn/Winter 2010-11

A flurry of bold and dramatic lips have come down the catwalk this week ranging in all shapes and sizes, but mostly all were a variation on the same gothic, grungy theme: maroon glitter at Doo.ri, deep violet at Peter Som, aubergine at Luca Luca, rich red at Donna Karan, and deep copper at Derek Lam. This continued at Proenza Schouler where last season's summer surfer girl received an off-duty winter makeover. Diane Kendal and her team painted two versions of an early Nineties charred red lips. Blondes were given a rich purple shade and brunettes a rusty red. Diane's top tip for applying a dark lip is to, "apply with a brush for more intense colour, starting darker in the center and getting softer at the edges for a more modern effect".

Carnaval

Well,last week Ive celebrated Carnaval.
Carnaval is a festival celebrated by Catholic origin in the three days preceding Ash Wednesday. According to tradition the festival lasts from Sunday to Tuesday - Shrove Tuesday. Lent begins at midnight on 40 days of up to Easter.

In the Netherlands two types of Carnival celebrated: The Rhenish carnival and the carnival Burgundy. The Rhineland variant is mostly in the south of Limburg and Noord-Brabant celebrated, the Burgundian version in the north and west of North Brabant [edit]. The misconception that all city names change with carnival is widespread, this is the case with the exuberant carnival. The Rhenish Carnival in the Netherlands is a derivative of the Cologne carnival. The carnival has its origins in Burgundy eetfeesten during the traditional carnival in the Low Countries, particularly Flanders.

The Burgundian carnival is the variant in most places in North Brabant and Zeeland Flanders traditionally Catholic presence. It has its origins in the prosperous cities of the Duchy of Brabant and Flanders County at the time of the Burgundian Netherlands. The thrust of the Burgundian carnival was originally that of a fancy dinner party where we made another ridiculous. The great poverty that prevailed in Brabant from the heyday of the Golden Age to the Second World War is characterized by the traditional feast (apparent) simplicity in terms of costumes, whose famous blue peasant shirt with handkerchief perhaps his most iconic. the change the name of the city: It is customary for cities with an exuberant carnival tradition (although in some places in eastern Netherlands and the Rhineland carnival this basis do) to change the name during carnival. Some examples are: Kielegat: Breda, Strien City: Steenbergen, jug City: Tilburg(my city), Krabbegat: Bergen op Zoom, Lampegat: Eindhoven, Oeteldonk: 's-Hertogenbosch, Krabberdonk: Den Dungen and Sand Hare DURP: Rosmalen.

Carnival Foundation. The main features of the carnival (hoofdbal, key transfer, parades) are owned by a foundation. The foundation chooses a prince (and effect) from. There is only one prince for each city.

Motto. Many, but not all, have an official motto exuberant carnivals. This is often a lofty phrase in local dialect. In the parade, people may go to the motto rigging and possibly win a prize.

Clothing. Traditional clothing consists of old clothing, curtains, handkerchiefs and blue blouses with various accessories. Especially in the West of Ontario it is seen in large numbers back. Burgundian Carnival is mostly inside cafes and halls. There it is warmer, so the clothing is less thick and consists of fewer layers. To and from the various party locations to go, many old coats to the outside not to get cold.
But the younger generation dresses up like devils, angels, geeks, snowwhite, pirates ect.
So you can compare carnaval with halloween
